If you are anything like me (in which case I feel for you, I really do!), then you will have stacks of wicked movies in your collection… on clunking great old VHS tapes. Yes, there are some films that never seem to be shown on TV anymore and the only way you can watch them is by dragging out that dirty great prehistoric top-loader! Annoying isn’t it? But, just to rub salt in the wound, many of these cracking titles are not available to buy on DVD!!! And that is exactly why I decided to invest in a VHS to AVI conversion kit. I found this item online and it seemed to provide the ultimate answer to all of my viewing problems…

When my new gadget finally dropped through the letterbox, I was on it like a shot! %u2018So many awesome movies to convert and so very little time!!!'I proclaimed. But it was then that the real nightmare began…

After setting settings, tweaking settings and resetting settings for almost three hours I was becoming increasingly frustrated. Why in God’s name was this thing so amazingly complicated??? Up to now, every conversion I had managed to carry out was so gargantuan in size that it was in serious danger of giving my hard drive a hernia! If I carried on like this then I would soon require professional data cleansing services.

Perhaps there were better VHS to AVI conversion kits out there (I’d certainly hope so!!), but this one really was a pig in a poke. To get a half decent copy of a just one VHS film would mean an AVI of about 14 GB as a result! And that was just plain silly.

So if you are thinking about buying one of these kits just make sure it’s not like mine. Get as much technical information about it as you can or you could end up feeling really miffed off and totally out of pocket… like me!

Columbia, Challenger, Atlantis, Discovery, Endeavour and Enterprise - all these fall under the master class creations of mankind that took us out into the realms previously unknown to man, not just unknown but unachievable. We’ve come this point in human history and none would conflict the fact that majority of the most fascinating things we know or we’ve seen comes from out there. Although the Challenger and Columbia had fatal endings, none of these can be weighed in proportion in terms of the launches recorded, each played an equally important, equally integral part in taking us further and further to the unknown.
Atlantis today made its final touch down from its final mission from the International Space Station, and although people don’t really care about shuttle launches to the outer space that much anymore, I regard every launch and every land and achievement of a life time. Sure were heading into times when they do get common and sure we do move into and era where space tourism will get popular and fast very commercial but this rather miraculous lift from the crust of earth to kiss the heavens above is no matter of small talk to me but is a story of success that we shall read to our children who will further pass it on theirs.
I take this opportunity to thank all those who took us there, shared their experience with us and all those who risked and lost their lives in the process. Never I have seen such courage and determination from people who put their lives on the line to understand who we are and where we stand in the mysteries of existence.

The WiPower Technology

There was the WiPower technology that was on display at the CTIA wireless show held in Orlando in March. This technology allows for power to be transmitted over a distance with no wires. The principle of operation of this technology is based on magnetic resonance. This technology has not yet been publicly disclosed but is in its nascent stages. There would not be the need for direct physical contact between the charger and the device. Mobile phones therefore would be one of the first devices that would be benefitted with such a technology as the battery life of a mobile device is one of its major banes as of now. Along with mobile phones there are also the tablets and readers and other such infotainment devices that would be benefited with this technology. Those employed in radiography jobs would liken it to instruments that work on electromagnetic radiation

Not only is the advantage of independence to distance and physical connection gained, there is also the probability of the same charger being used to charge two or multiple units simultaneously. Therefore, two cell phones therefore could be charged together at the same time using this technology.

There is an expected growth of recharging stations in an exponential manner given the increasing demand and use of mobile devices, and the major device in that being the cell phone. There are hopes that the technology would get into commercial production stage early next year. The main hurdle as of now is obtaining the FCC clearance, which Qualcomm have indicated is in talks with the necessary people. Recently I was at a tech store near my workplace buying a carte r4i and they had just receive the new Looxcie Bluetooth headset that has a camera built-in.

This wireless headset is innovative to say the least as it allows users to record video and to also share it. This is done from your head and you will have up to four hours of recording time at your disposal.

The camera will record 480×320 video footage at fifteen frames per second. It will also give you up to five hours of storage space with its local memory of 4 GB.

Now let’s not get lost in the fact that it has a camera because it is really a Bluetooth headset and behaves in this manner. So a user will be able to do a lot of what can be done on a standard Bluetooth headset. Therefore it can take calls and this can be done even while you are recording. Through the use of a dedicated Android app clips of about 30 seconds can be uploaded to the major social networks such as twitter, Facebook, and YouTube with a simple touch. Video cropping is also possible although in a limited way and is expected to be able to support other platforms including iPhone, Blackberry, and Windows phone later this year.

The headset does not support live streaming video, not yet anyway, but if they could get that feature on the headset would mean a serious leap.

The set is nicely designed and simple. It is also rugged and can surely take a beating from everyday usage.

Smaller is the new bigger

Alcatel-Lucent’s new cell tower, not really a cell tower is now set to replace the old ugly cellphone transmitters that are getting bigger and uglier taking up more of the precious and expensive space needed. The new LightRadio which is the size of a Rubik’s cube is the future of cellphone network transmission. Although its not yet ready to up & go, it is the first attempt to challenge the humongous cell towers is itself a big step.
Nevertheless, this is what it can do for you, according to Bloomberg Business Week article, it can save upto 50% of the investment need to set up a cellular network or a cellular company. The big deal about it is that these small yet useful devices can do exactly the same thing that a cell tower can do and at the same time it can reduce the cost of acquiring cell towers that are getting more expensive as the amount of data being transfered over the handle held devices are increasing - larger number of text messages, pictures, videos and live 3G conversations. LightRadio is capable of transmitting 2G, 3G and LTE transmissions, and thats good news.
The 2.5 inch cubes will replace the 200 foot monsters to save space, energy, money, investment, profits and reduce overheads to run the giants. Although the consumer haven’t come rushing in as yet, the device still needs some more work, once that is done, every cellphone company can be expected at the door step and Alcatel-Lucent’s office. The future of the economy, society and indeed the planet rests on us as a species finding more sustainable ways of travelling and moving our stuff about. The haulage industry is one of the most ancient industries, and also one which has reacted most readily to modernity and modernisation. The internal combustion engine revolutionised the way we get about and the way we bring our favourite foods, clothes and consumer products to our homes.

Trucks are an example of this. They move everything everywhere – the chances are, unless you live actually in a railway station, everything you’ve ever owned has at some point been in a lorry or van. While the UK has got a reasonable rail network (no thanks to the infamous Dr Beeching) we are still heavily reliant on road transport for our goods. The United States of America is a hundred times as bad – their rail network is poor, and enormous juggernauts propel their wares from state to state at enormous cost to the owner and to the environment.

Running a lorry is expensive – petrol, taxes, driver training, lorry insurance and of course buying the lorry in the first place – so it is not surprising that lorry owners are reluctant to fork out for technology that may not be directly useful. However, recently lorry owners have modified their vehicles to be more aerodynamic (as can be seen on Asda’s lorries) and some have inherited a trick from the agricultural sector – adding urea (from pig wee) to diesel engines for added efficiency.
